Have you ever wondered why a shipyard needs a chemical laboratory? This is one of the most important elements of the quality assurance system – precise chemical analyses are the basis of technical diagnostics of overhauled and repaired ships and a guarantee of their reliable operation.
Our Chemical Laboratory, which has been in operation for several decades, acts as a guardian of the technical condition of every ship serviced at the Shipyard. We specialize in the testing of petroleum products – from lubricating oils, hydraulic oils, to gear and propulsion oils. These analyses are not just routine tests – they are basic diagnostics of the technical condition of the most important ship systems.
Imagine a ship’s main engine as a patient and our laboratory as a diagnostic center. Just as a blood test can pinpoint human health problems, oil analysis can reveal potential failures before they occur. Thanks to the high-precision measurements provided by our equipment and the experience of our team, we can detect even the smallest anomalies that could lead to serious malfunctions.
The diagnostics carried out in our laboratory translate into tangible benefits for vessel owners: improved performance, prolonged life of systems and equipment in vessel power plants. It is also a significant reduction in operating costs by avoiding unplanned repairs and downtime.
An important advantage of our laboratory is its location in the heart of the shipyard. Thanks to this, the production departments receive the results of analyses even within 4 hours, which allows for immediate response and efficient repair work. This is a huge time-saver compared to outsourcing tests to an external laboratory, where you have to wait 2-3 work days for the results.
The advantages of having a laboratory at the shipyard are also felt, for example, when flushing hydraulic systems. This is especially important in the case of systems that control critical functions of the ship – from the control of deck equipment, to mooring systems, to steering mechanisms. Because of the precision of these systems, even the smallest contamination can lead to serious failures.
For large vessels, where hydraulic systems can be up to several hundred meters long, the flushing process must be carried out in stages. Thanks to the rapid analysis of samples, we can issue a decision to continue flushing further sections after just one hour, which significantly streamlines the entire process and guarantees the safety of the systems.
In addition, our laboratory actively participates in environmental protection, cooperating with the Health, Safety and Environment Department in monitoring water and wastewater management. We conduct regular tests on the quality of industrial wastewater and water in the port basins, which allows us to immediately detect and respond to any possible irregularities
PGZ Stocznia Wojenna recently joined the Startup Booster Poland Acceleration Zone at the Gdansk Science and Technology Park to work even more effectively to protect the environment. Real-time monitoring of water in port basins will enable us to respond quickly to potential environmental incidents, such as spills of oil-based substances.
The top quality of our laboratory’s work has been confirmed by a recertification audit by the Polish Accreditation Center (in accordance with PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018-02), resulting in the extension of the Accreditation Certificate for another four years and the extension of its scope. We are one of only four laboratories in Poland accredited to determine the purity class of hydraulic fluids and oils. This international recognition not only confirms the competence of our team, but also obliges us to further develop and maintain the highest standards in the industry.
