On 14 April 2025, a technically complex operation to tow a multi-tonne floating dock belonging to PGZ Stocznia Wojenna to a newly built dock in the Port of Gdynia was successfully completed. This is an unusual operation, requiring precise coordination and specialised preparation.

The towing of the dock is an important element of one of the most significant hydraulic engineering investments carried out as part of the project ‘Deepening of the approach channel and internal waters of the Port of Gdynia – stages I and III, and reconstruction of quays – stages II and III’, co-financed by the European Union.

The relocation of the dock is an important element of the cooperation between the Shipyard and the Port of Gdynia. The new location will enable us to continue carrying out repair and modernisation works for the Polish Navy, while allowing the Port of Gdynia to implement the new turning basin project, explains Maciej Poprawski, Management Board Representative for Investments at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.

For the shipyard, the relocation of the dock means adapting the infrastructure to the new operating conditions of the port while maintaining full capacity for the repair and modernisation of the Polish Navy.

This operation is not only the technical completion of an important stage, but also a clear signal that the Port of Gdynia is effectively implementing its development strategy. Thanks to this investment, we are gaining new opportunities – we can accommodate larger vessels, increase operational flexibility, and strengthen shipbuilding potential. This is a project that has an impact not only on the port, but also on the entire region, emphasises Piotr Gorzeński, President of the Board of Morski Port Gdynia S.A.

The main goal of the project is to develop the port to accommodate container and bulk carriers up to 400 metres long and 14.5 metres draught, and to strengthen the position of the Port of Gdynia in global logistics chains.

Scope of completed works

The completed works include:

  • three new quays were built: South (130 m), East (43 m) and North (170 m);
  • 424 CFA piles and 117 micropiles were installed;
  • 179 tubular piles and 578 tonnes of sheet piling were sunk;
  • two mooring dolphins, each weighing almost 55 tonnes, were constructed.
  • the dock basin and the neighbouring body of water were deepened to a depth of 16 metres, with more than 120,000 m³ of dredging work;
  • more than 6,000 m³ of concrete and almost 500 tonnes of steel were installed.

The project was carried out by a consortium of NDI S.A. and NDI Sopot S.A. The project will contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the Port of Gdynia in the Baltic Sea region and ensuring greater navigational and structural safety of the port infrastructure.
